How the image compressor works
Choose one of three levels. Low keeps quality highest with a modest size reduction, Balanced is a good default for most images, and High aims for the smallest files, which can visibly soften fine detail. Each image keeps its original format.
JPG and WEBP images are re-encoded at a lower quality with extra optimisation. For PNG, Low applies lossless optimisation, while Balanced and High reduce the number of colours (a lossy step that still keeps transparency). This works very well for graphics and screenshots and less well for detailed photos.
We never pretend a file got smaller. You'll see the original size, the new size and the percentage change for every image, plus a before-and-after comparison slider. If compression doesn't make an image smaller, we keep your original and tell you.
